Art in Islam
I am a student and newcomer to ‘Riyadul Jannah’ (an excellent magazine) and interested in art and design. I am aware of the rule of not portraying the human from, eyes, nose and mouth etc., and I try not to do so in my work. The problem is that I have not had much clarification of the Islamic view point on art and design, as it is a subject that many Muslims do not take seriously, or because they think all art and design is the portrayal of the nude images, e.t.c. (Which is not) .I am sure there is a lot of work that can be done in this field that does not contradict Islamic law and the teaching of our beloved Prophet (Peace be upon him). I hope that the information I receive will help other Muslims to.
The rule with regard to art and drawing is very simple and clear in Islam. All forms of art are allowed except those, which require the drawing of any animate object (human or animal). The drawing of inanimate objects, geometrical designs, etc. is openly permitted. The Ahadeeth on this subject are too numerous to mention. You may refer top them in any authentic compilation of hadeeth you wish to.
