What to read when visiting the graveyard

 

What should one do whilst visiting the graves?

Firstly one should send salutations upon entry into the graveyard. The following words are prescribed in the Hadeeth: “Peace be upon you, O Muslim people of the graves. Insha-Allah. We will indeed join you. We ask from Allah protection and safety for us and you.” Thereafter, one should invoke the mercy of Allah and his pardon and forgiveness for the dead through recitation and du’aa. One may recite any portion of the Qur’an, but in some narration’s specific virtue has been mentioned for Surah Yaaseen, Surah Falaq, Surah Tabaarak, Surah Faatihah, Surah Zilzaal, Surah Takaathur, Surah Kaafiroon, Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Naas, and Surah Aayatul Kursi.
